iDiot (me) buys iPhone!!

The answer you entered to the math problem is incorrect.

Title says it all...  Review to follow....

Update July 2:

iPhone is fun to use as you all know by now either by owning or test driving it.  I really haven't read any issues with the phone or service since launch except for minor activation issues.

I wanted to wait for iPhone 2.0 because it lacks 3G.  I couldn't resist and bought it 24hrs after launch (hence called myself iDiot!!).  Well, EDGE isn't that bad.  Sure it takes 30 - 40 secs to load NYTimes.com, but I don't think I'd use iPhone to read news from websites like these even if it supported 3G.  EDGE, in my opinion is good enough to browse not so graphics intensive sites to get information and not to sit and pass time browsing.

Here's my experience with it.

  • Bought it at Apple store.  It was a breeze and very well executed.  Paid by credit card, didn't have to sign or wait for receipt.  It was sent over via email.
  • Activation was straight forward.  It took me 10 mins from start to finish.  At one point I was prompted that my business account discount plan ceases to exist with this contract.
  • I was away from home where I have all my iTunes library on my iMac.  I had to activate it on Vista (Yuck!).  I resynced it with my iMac after getting home and it is cleansed of all evil :-)
  • I took some pictures with iPhone.  Didn't expect too much with the camera and quality of pictures.  It's good for fun use.
  • All the features are as seen in the commercials.  No lag, no performance issues.
  • It's a cooool toy and functional too.  No other phone comes close in terms of useability.
  • EDGE network is not bad at all, if you want to get just the information you need, like google maps, SMS, email (not multimedia intensive), etc.  YouTube isn't bad at all except for slight lag.

I found some strange behavior though

  • When I tried to browse, it found a WiFi hotspot and I canceled and chose to use EDGE and later setup to connect to WiFi.  I am not sure how to set priority to use WiFi first before connecting to EDGE.  I am not sure if there's any such setting.  At home it always tries EDGE even though WiFi is available.  May be a bug that needs to be addressed.
  • I used it all evening and with 75% battery charged, I left it connected to my iMac overnight.  In the morning iPhone didn't wake up but booted and the battery was all drained.  Looks like it shutoff itself at 5% battery life.  It took couple of hours to charge to 50%.

Features that I felt are missing and should be there

  • iChat:  This is a must default app.  I don't want to use the one written as a web app.  Heard that Apple is working on some apps and will be delivered as future update.
  • Push mail support for Gmail and not just Yahoo.

Update July 4:

The battery drained by morning again.  This time iPhone was not connected to my iMac.  May be the issue is with my google mail setup to check mail every 15 mins.  I changed the settings to check every hour now.  I'll post an update with this setting.
